The Chain

Lovingly spoke of his honor, respect
Linked closed by one, he trusts most
A chain, unbroken, he proudly hosts.
Not many know the weight of the chain
Ne’er be removed capriciously ever again
A commitment, perhaps; a calling to some
It speaks of a life shared, newly begun.
With time, the rusty thing is a badge to wear
To remind its bearer of the promises he bears
Not to forsake it for momentary joy or bliss
The chain’s metal is solid, yet tender as a kiss.
The chain is not just for everyone you see
It bears no resemblance to fancy jewelry
In fact it’s distracting to view, a weight untold
The dignified bearer is he who can hold.
The chain I wear lovingly around my neck
Was fused with love; and a promise to protect
Protect the love of who so gently placed it there
Never to stray or lose sight; be evermore there.
